The Lebanon

August 28th, 2009

Another first for Eskimo this week with our first supply of radiators to Lebanon. Afkar Architects specified bespoke Outline radiators in various finishes including our fabulous super mirror for a private residence in the hills above Beirut, and with 12 gorgeous radiators for the gym alone, this is going to be one extraordinary home.

We’re in further talks with Afkar regarding Eskimo representation in the Middle East so watch this space – we’ve shipped some display radiators along with those specified for the private client, so if you are in the area you’ll shortly be able to view Eskimo at that end of the Med. See www.afkararchitects.com for more details on this and other projects.

Incidentally, this is totally unrelated, but I just had a listen to The Human League tune of the same name and it’s worthy of a link – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEsRYkRpySY – Phil

100% Design

July 20th, 2009

Picture 7Eskimo, the innovators of radiator design, are back at 100% showcasing something of a brief departure from heated products; Old Deer, silver plated Scottish red deer antlers. Drawing on our experience of metal finishing and our love of horny beasts, Eskimo have created a thing of beauty from a beautiful thing. See our previous post in the ‘hot but not heated’ category.

Even more excitingly, we’re teaming up with another great gang, ssshhhh! wait…all will be revealed! “What does it mean”? I hear you whisper, “give me a hint” I hear you scream “i’m impatient you know”! Well, it means that ‘Old Deer’ will be launching a range, especially designed for 100% Design, that will be featuring some new and interesting alternatives to the traditional wooden ’shield’ that the antlers are usually mounted upon. Well, it is 100% Design after all.

Come and get a ‘heads up’ at stand A15 (see what I did there?)

Eskimo goes back to school

June 11th, 2009

We’re incredibly proud to say that the Eskimo Towelclip has been selected for use in the curriculum of the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO), taught in 2600 schools in 134 countries.

The IBO has been running for 40 years now, is supported by Unesco, and they’d like to use the Towelclip as an example of gorgeous design for teaching students in the Design & Technology Diploma Programme available in French, Spanish and English.

While our communication with IBO is of course confidential, we have to admit that we’ve seen the exam paper and amazingly everyone at Eskimo scored at least 98% on the subject of the Towelclip.

Anyone wanting a copy of the IB exam paper; don’t even think about it, our integrity is unquestionable (up to around 20 grand, after that we’re happy to take questions).

The Demolition Party at the Royal Monceau

Due to repoen in 2010, the Royal Monceau is currently undergoing a total refurbishment designed by France’s finest, Philippe Starck. As Monsieur Starck apparently has Eskimo Outline radiators throughout his Paris apartment it was only natural that he’d want to specify them for a commercial project. Read more about the future of the Royal Monceau here:

idfx love it!

May 8th, 2009

No, we’re not in the business of swearing. May’s issue of idfx magazine have featured “the glam Ron radiator by Eskimo, created by polishing, etching and gold anodising each aluminium section…”.

As part of their Blaze of Glory issue, baroque making a dazzling return to interiors, our beautiful new radiator design, gold Ron, is part of their Pulse article. And as idfx magazine is inspiration for interior design professionals, we say hoorah! But whether you’re professional or glamourous or both, everyone deserves a little beauty and warmth and, as Ron is modular in design, you can have a little or as much as you desire.

Give the Eskimo team a call on 0207 117 0110 if you would like to find out more.

The man behind Eskimo, great radiator design…what else has he been up to we ask?

April 17th, 2009

Take an ‘Old Deer’ home to your fireplace

Some of you may be disappointed, but we’re not suggesting that Grandma should come to stay indefinitely. No, we’re introducing you to the latest product of beauty, ‘Old Deer’ –  Silver plated Scottish red deer antlers mounted on dark walnut or oak.

Phil Ward, co-founder of Eskimo, better known for gorgeous radiators and beautifully designed hot things in general, designed Old Deer. Old Deer is Phil’s first foray into designing a purely decorative product with no heating function.

Phil developed the idea after he was introduced to deer stalking in the Scottish Highlands.

Phil loves his ‘Old Deer’. “It’s been a real joy to design and work with a product where the process of manufacture partly involves a magnificent red deer stag wandering around a Scottish mountain with only hinds on his mind. The plating process then lifts the texture of each set of antlers, in particular bringing out the contrast between the lovely matt sections on the main body of the antlers and the polished tips where he’ll have sharpened his antlers against a tree. If you want guaranteed uniformity then this is the wrong product for you, the Stag was in charge of production and quality control, if you don’t like the imperfections take it up with him.”

Scottish deer stalking is essential in enhancing and preserving biodiversity and woodland habitats in the Highlands. It is the lifeblood of the Highland rural economy and is ultimately the only way to preserve the wild red deer herds that roam this part of Scotland from the west to the east coasts. Phil works closely with a number of professional deer stalkers from selected estates in the Highlands, to ensure that everything is carried out in the correct way with total respect for these beautiful creatures always at the forefront of their minds.

‘Old Deer’ is contemporary playfulness on the beauty and decadence of the traditional grand house and hunting lodge interior. This time accentuating the precious nature of a truly natural product.

The antlers for ‘Old Deer’ come from sustainably managed wild red deer herds and the stalkers carefully select and prepare each set of antlers, marking each one with the date and where the stag was shot on the mountain. The antlers are then taken for silver plating in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter before being mounted on gorgeous dark stained walnut or oak shields with an attachment suitable for hanging on your wall. A small subtle plaque, on the back, records the source and date of the antlers, together with the quantity of Old Deer manufactured that year.

What Phil most likes about using real deer antlers is that each one is as unique as the deer from which it came – clues to the habitat and life cycle of the stag are recorded in the shape and size of the antlers. For instance, deer which spend more of their time in woodland, tend to have antlers with a narrower spread than those which live on the open moorland, and those which have access to better grazing grow thicker antlers than those which don’t. Also many of the antlers are polished in places where the stag rubs them to sharpen their tips for the rut and some may even be scratched and have the odd broken point if they belonged to a particularly feisty beast. The silver then provides a lustrous uniform decorative coating that brings the texture forward without hiding any of the imperfections, which make each beautiful ‘Old Deer’ unique. Never a truer word spoken.

Managing the deer herds is the responsibility of the Scottish Estates and the Deer Commission. Maintaining a healthy viable population is the goal. To achieve that the stalker aims to take out only the old and the sick animals (hence the product name) consequently the quantity of antlers available for Old Deer in any one year reflect deer numbers in the previous season – the product is by nature limited edition. This year numbers are limited to 76 pairs of antlers although Eskimo expect to obtain a slightly larger number next season.

Old Deer are available direct from Eskimo or via selected distributors throughout Europe.

Eskimo Outline electric radiators

March 16th, 2009

We’ve had a few distributors mention recently that we don’t make enough of the fact that our Outline radiators are available in electric versions. We’ve been making electric radiators for years of course, but most of them have been exported to our overseas markets. Now that the UK is finally getting round to changing it’s dependency on fossil fuels and the age of cheap gas is over, we believe that electric radiators are going to become more prevalent, as radiators for use with renewables mean electric radiators. SO, just to remind everone WE MAKE ELECTRIC RADIATORS. And they’re gorgeous, and they’re eskimo of course; so they’re available with high heat outputs and lots of finishes, including brushed stainless steel, polsihed stainless steel and brass.

Eskimo Technical Help

March 2nd, 2009

We’re often asked for our help with technical issues for heating and plumbing. Radiator installation, radiator sizing, radiator bleeding, radiator balancing etc. So over the next few weeks we’re going to start posting help topics on the Eskimo site. So whether you have an Eskimo Ron radiator, an Eskimo Outline radiator, an Eskimo Towelclip or someone else’s (dirty, filthy, ugly) radiator entirely, if you have heating questions it’s worth consulting the Eskimo technical site for FAQs and specific help pages. If you don’t then find what you’re looking for please call us on 0207 117 0110 and dial 2 for technical support, we might be geeky because we love making heat but we’re very friendly and won’t make you feel silly just because you don’t know a BTU from a bleeding key.
